Here’s Your Wednesday Sunshine…

Remember that huge nest that I found a couple of blocks from my house? You know, the one that was way up at the top of a tree? I posted a picture of it in my first Wednesday Sunshine post about a month ago. Last night I was woken up in the early hours of the morning by hooting. Lots of hooting! If you’ve never heard a great horned owl hoot, let me tell you, it is booming! Clearly, something was up.

The babies have left the nest!

There are now three owls that we can see on my block; two are in trees and one is hanging out on a chimney. This fledgling is in my neighbor’s tree right above the side walk. Never, ever, will I get a shot like this again.

Isn’t this the coolest thing ever?!

I’m pretty sure that we are all in for some more booming hoots tonight… I think that the largest owl in the tallest tree is one of the parents… how strange, I didn’t see any bunnies this evening… every bunny knows to hide when the great horned owl hoots in the night!

Good days in a sad time continue.

Have a good week, everyone. Be safe.

  1. Oh, how lucky you are ! – and what a SUPER shot ! You must be so proud of yourself for getting it – at least, you should be. 🙂

    1. I couldn’t believe it! It was coming on dusk so I think the owl could see me; it turned its head to look right at me as I lined up the shot. I will never, ever get a shot like that again!!

  2. Well he or she looks rather splendid, and still fluffy! I think I’ve seen one of these in a zoo but having one locally that’s nicer, but noisy. We have barn owls in the woods nearby but I can’t see I’d every be able to get a photo. Well done on this one.

      1. We have lots of owls here in eastern nc, we hear them nearly every night, and once in awhile see one fly through the yard.

      2. I may have seen a great horned kayaking one time, it flew right over me. The ones I see in the yard I have no idea, but they’re big! And its usually dark when that happens.

    1. There is a lot of wildlife in my neighborhood, that’s for sure. There it’s a greenbelt that comes through the middle with a stream that supports lots of critters, and then they radiate it towards homes and yards. One night I had a giant raccoon on my back deck, and sometimes I hear coyotes and see antelopes.

      1. I took out my field guide to read about them Those owls are big! There are some that are common in my area, but they like to nest in odd places. They really are fascinating birds.
