Hannah and the CoalBear: Bugs, Yarn, and Golden Leaves

Hi. I’m Hannah.

Have you seen Project Hail Mary? Bump My Paw!!!

It has been crazy wild around here lately. The Mother of Cats has been making lots of trips out of the house and some strange people have been stopping by to do worker-man stuff. The Mother of Cats told me that it was the sprinkler system getting winterized, and the furnace serviced, but whatever. No one brought me tuna, so they are just bums, right? The CoalBear and I spent a lot of time in the closet and under the bed, let me tell you! We should have gotten double tuna for the trauma, but no, that did not happen… Then there were days of rain. Now the leaves on the trees are turning golden yellow, there are flocks of birds in the yards, and lots of bugs for the CoalBear to chase have appeared in the fallen leaves on the catio deck. Does The CoalBear (AKA Mateo) bring leaves into the house on his fur… yes. Yes he does!

The CoalBear and I were forced to watch Cat TV on YouTube while it was raining because the Mother of Cats wouldn’t let us go out on the catio.

I am a little concerned to report that the Mother of Cats is still engaged in crazy sock knitting, but she also took a few days to make baby booties and a baby hat for a friend. I did like that yarn a lot, but nope, nope, nope… I didn’t get to do any yarn chomping. Anyway, here is what it looks like now that the baby stuff is done.

The Mother of Cats tried to get me to model the baby knits, but I didn’t get any double tuna, so that was a big NO!! This Starbucks bear had to do the deed.

Okay, even I have to admit that they turned out a little cute. Do you see the yellow leaves in the picture? That’s because the crazy leaves on the trees are also falling off!!! I don’t understand what is happening here…

Then there is the sock knitting. She is more than halfway done with ANOTHER pair of socks.

The Mother of Cats is also reading that book while we are out on the catio every morning. She says that it is really good, but I’m a cat, so what do I know.

So that has been life. Lots of commotion, lots of knitting, scary people coming into the house, and…

These crazy pumpkins appeared!

The Mother of Cats has been busy inside the house too, moving furniture and cleaning closets. When will things return to normal? She says that she needs to make room for the outdoor plants when then weather gets colder and they move inside. Oh boy! Maybe there will be more bugs? Last year some ladybugs came in with the plants. I loves the ladybugs!!!

This is Hannah, signing off.

Notes from the Mother of Cats:

  • The baby bootie pattern is one that has been in my family for four generations and is published on Ravelry as Christine’s Stay-On Baby Booties. I modified the top with some ribbing and made a baby hat to match.
  • I scored some great homemade tamales at the Fall Festival where I got the pumpkins.
  • I’m going to try to cook at least one of the pumpkins to make puree for soup and breads. I’m thinking that the crock pot is my best friend in this upcoming adventure!
  • My routine colonoscopy/endoscopy was more adventurous this time as I had to be hospitalized and placed onto a high flow machine for the procedure. (The machine was amazing!!!! It was so much easier to breathe!!!) I’ve been steadily losing weight for months and my iron is low, so it was time to look for a cause. All is fine cancer-screening wise, but I have acquired a new doctor, they discovered some new scleroderma-related complications that are impacting my ability to eat meals, and I am on a new medication to treat an infection. The new drug is making me a little dizzy. Systemic sclerosis: the adventure never ends.
  • How have I responded to the results… must knit more socks!!!!
  • What can I say about Cool Machine? There is a reason why Colson Whitehead has received the Pulitzer Prize more than once. The imagery and wordcraft are amazing, the City of New York fills the story, and I am enjoying the experience immensely.
Golden leaves on my honey locust tree.

  1. I’d love to see your colorful trees. Ours are beginning to turn here, but we still have days when it’s in the 90s or close to it. When night falls, the temp drops from the 90s or high 80s to the 50s or 40s like it saw a state trooper (not my joke – I borrowed it).

As for the high-flow machine, until I looked it up and saw that it was for respiratory maintenance, I thought how grim if it were something horrible to be used as part of a colonoscopy.

Have you read vet reports about what happens when as much as 15% of a cat’s weekly diet is made of tuna? The biochemical response when cats eat this much tuna leads to behavioral activities which aren’t wonderful for the cat or the owner.

    1. I added a picture of the golden leaves. 🙂 My maple tree is gone so I don’t have as much color in the yard as usual, but the gold against the bright blue sky is amazing. I like your joke about temperature drops; the same thing is happening now n the Denver area and we even had our first freeze warning last week.

The high flow machine is kind of new, and I think that the technology emerged in the innovative chaos of covid response. They have been in the ICU for a few years now, but recently they are being used with anesthesia.

Poor Hannah. This is why she doesn’t get all the tuna that she wants. I open a little tuna topper package every morning, and it gets divided between the two cats. If Mateo doesn’t eat his fast enough, however, Hannah has been known to polish his off.
