I bought a really fun skein of hand-dyed yarn a few weeks ago. It is another yarn from Zen Yarn Gardens Serenity 20 in the colorway Burning Bush. I cast on to make a pair of vine lace mitts a couple of days later, and here is how they turned out:

Cute, huh. These mitts fit really well, and they go great with my black, grey and fushia tops. The colors in the mitt, however, didn’t really stand out the way I thought they would. The grey is almost gone. I decided to make a second pair of mitts in simple stockinette to see how that would change the way the yarn looked. Here they are:

Wow. What a difference the pattern made. Both mitts are comfy, but the second pair will go a lot better over my black gloves and with my new grey sweater. I do think that the stockinette pair shows off the “burning bush” characteristics of the yarn. But the lace mitts are really cute. I made both pairs with the same number of stitches and shaped the thumbs the same way. Which do you guys like better?
I haven’t written up the pattern for the garter vine lace mitts, but I did write down the details in my pattern notes on Ravelry. Here’s the link if anyone is interested.
I way like the first ones better!!!! The second ones are plain boring… the first ones… ooh la la!
They are fancy looking. 🙂 I’m thinking that the lace looks better in a solid.
The stockinette pair- i like the the colors better.
I think that the stockinette does show the colors beer too. This yarn doesn’t pool, which is nice.
Definitely the stockinette!
Mmm, I prefer the pattern of the lace and the colour of the plain, it’s a shame you can’t have both!! I didn’t realise how much difference the pattern could make to the look of the yarn! Sharon x
Wow. I’m going to have to think about “both” what if the mitts were stockinette with a lace panel on the top, or maybe lace in the cuff…
Sounds great, have you enough yarn left though?!! You certainly wouldn’t have cold hands for awhile, either that or a couple of Christmas gifts in the cupboard ready for this year! x
The stocking stitch version for me. The lace would look really nice in a semi solid I bet 🙂
It does. The solid color makes the lace pattern stand out more. I used the lace with the handpaint so it wouldn’t pool, but as it turns out that wasn’t a problem. Lesson learned. 🙂
Surprising results.
I prefer the lacy ones.
Beautiful color! I have some Zen in my stash and now I’m looking even more forward to using it.
It is really nice yarn, isn’t it. I’m also making a Hitchhiker out of Serenity 20, and it feels so nice.
