Hannah and the CoalBear: Things are Growing

Hi. I’m Mateo.

Do you see my new winter coat growing in?

The Mother of Cats has been kind of amazed to see my new coat growing in this year. I do have to say, it is looking pretty good! Every year I make some adjustments to my coat, and this year I’m thinking that silver is a nice color. Here, I’ll show you what I’m talking about:

This is my coat in 2021. I was just a little guy, only 8 months old.

I was mostly a black cat, and the Mother of Cats was pretty amazed to see all the long fur growing in as she didn’t expect it. Last winter my coat was kind of brownish-grey, and it was really pretty long.

The picture on the left is how I looked in about April this year. The all black coat is what I looked like in June: big difference, right? Do you like the way my winter fur doesn’t grow across my shoulders? That is what makes the Mother of Cats think that I am partly a Maine coon kitty. Maine coon kitties are usually really large, but I’m really tiny and cute.

Okay, that is enough about me. I really want to show off the sweater that the Mother of Cats is working on. She has been knitting on it for a couple of hours every single day, and it is starting to look like a sweater!! Hannah really is a big help with this, and I sometimes hang out, but mostly I hang in at the front window hoping to see a bunny or two. We even saw a mouse in the back yard this week!!! Knitting is kind of boring when there is wildlife, don’t you think? Anyway, here is the sweater.

We really like doing the sleeves, Hannah and I, because the sweater can get draped over us as we sleep on the Mother of Cats legs.

Well, that’s about all that is going on here. The Mother of cats has been sewing (yawn) and going out for some errands (nap time!), and that has been the whole week. I sure hope something interesting happens out front soon…

Why does the Mother of Cats call me silly?

This is Mateo, signing off.

Notes from the Mother of Cats:

  • The sweater is the Alchemist Pullover. There is going to be ribbing added later around the neckline, and I am already worrying about yarn chicken…
  • I am wondering if the silver fur growing out now is related to Mateo’s medical misadventures over the summer. Poor Mateo did have a tough time there for a few days.
  • I saw a jade plant at the nursery with a few little flowers on it, and then I saw I jade plant bonsai tree. I have a huge jade plant that I have been growing for years, and now I’m thinking about taking some cutting at the next pruning so I can start a little bonsai tree of my own. It will be an adventure! Also, has my plant bloomed yet? No. No it has not!
This plant goes outside every summer, and some of the leaves on this plant have hail damage.

Why grow a bonsai from cutting off this plant?

That big boy is almost 3 feet tall and is getting heavier every year. Suddenly a bonsai seems really… cute. Besides, it isn’t blooming now, so maybe a bonsai will decide to bloom.

  1. Mateo, man of mystery.

Bonsai intrigue me. I’ve purchased several little juniper bonsai in the past because they remind me of trees up in the mountains. All failed. My black thumb remains intact.

A jade bonsai would be so interesting!

    1. I have to be honest: all of my other bonsai plants have died on me. Mostly they were junipers like the ones you’ve had. I’m intrigued by a jade bonsai as I have been pretty successful with them. The main thing is to not give them too much water!! Maybe the bonsai will bloom…

  2. To the Mother of Cats: Gorgeous sweater! I love it!

To Mateo: For ages now, I’ve legit thought you looked like a darker version of the Maine Coon mix my family had when I was a child. I miss her! Maine Coons are great cats. 🙂

    1. I am making more progress on the sweater and can’t wait to show it off after the nick ribbing is done.

I’m pretty sure that Mateo is some type of mix, but that fur and his face sure have Maine coon characteristics. His prey drive is off the charts!! He is a great cat, but he kind of exhausts Hannah. I just ordered some more electronic toys for him.

  3. Well, Mateo my man, you’ve convinced me to start wondering about your coat … I consulted Dr Google (as is my wont) about it, and AI (Colorado’s pet peeve !) stepped in and replied that such change is not unusual. Or words to that effect. But nought was said about Maine Coons. So there you go. And yes, you are indeed handsome !

Marilyn me love, the Alchemist is proving beautiful: I hadn’t noticed the extra large ribbing, before. D’uh ! 😦

Bonsai ? – a skill to dream of. I’m absolutely sure you would pick it up very quickly, just by doing what I did and setting up a consultation with Dr Google. I do hope you will: what could possibly go wrong ?! [grin]

    1. He’s like having two cats in one! He is demanding food every time I turn around lately; all that fur growing out is protein. No wonder he is hungry!!

I might go back to the nursery to buy that little jade plant bonsai that I saw. Sooo cute! I have been pruning the big plant that I have to get it to the shape I like, but it is getting so big now I won’t be able to put it outside for much longer in the summers.

      1. CHICKEN !! – not going to see how you might do it yourself ?! [grin]

Actually, I don’t blame you, Marilyn: you do have a fair bit on your plate already – at all times !

  4. Mateo looks very handsome! I don’t know that our cats get a winter coat; they look the same year round. But they are indoor cats and don’t really get much of a temperature variation.

Your sweater looks fabulous on you. Good luck with the yarn chicken!

I have a leggy little jade plant. Perhaps I should cut it back and see if it can fill out a bit. I know nothing about growing them!

    1. Mateo is an indoor cat too. I wonder how think that coat would get if he was outside in the cold?!! He has fur that covers the bottom of his feet that helps with cold weather too. He does go out onto the catio when it snows, but not for too long.

I have discovered that the jade plant responds really well from pruning. It usually puts in new growth at every location where I hack off a branch. I’m removing side branches so the main “trunks” stand up straight and support the plant well. I used to have to stack this plant, and now it stands on its own. It has also filled in and thickened as I removed the long side growth.

  5. I enjoyed the changing of the kitty colors series. He’s handsome in all shades. I like the ribbing along the bottom of the sweater.

It might be fun to create a static page on your blog with photos of your finished makes, linking to the detailed post.

    1. That would be a fun thing to do. Sigh. I’m still battling my wrists and feeling a little sad about my future knitting prospects. I’m getting some type of high-grade specialized ultrasound in a couple weeks that may help sort things out. More drugs!!
