Hannah and the CoalBear: Bad Days

Hi. I’m Mateo.

Do you see how I’m being treated?!

It has been the worst two weeks ever! I started throwing up early last week, and then the Mother of Cats shoved me into a cat carrier and rushed me to the emergency vet last Thursday. There were lots of tests and x-rays. I was treated badly. I got lot of drugs that were THE WORST and I was in a cage without the Mother of Cats anywhere in sight. I had needles with stuff coming out of them in both arms!!! The vet did more testing during the night, and early in the next morning he called the Mother of Cats to let her know I needed emergency surgery. So last Friday morning, as soon as the morning crew arrived, I was rushed into the operating room for abdominal exploratory surgery to remove a bowel obstruction.

Then I didn’t get better, and I had to have more drugs. I refused to eat and I hated my cone around my head. I WAS SO UPSET!!!! The Mother of Cats came to stay with me for an hour and brought all of my favorite treats and tuna, but I still wouldn’t eat…. so I got a feeding tube.

Last Saturday the Mother of Cats took me home to see if I would eat there. She took off that horrible cone and put me into a surgical recovery suit that she found on Amazon. I look pretty silly, but I was happy to be home: I found the food bowel and started chomping within 10 minutes of getting home.

They shaved my legs!!!

So now I am stuck in this big DOG crate for ANOTHER WEEK while my stitches heal. Hannah is getting all of the attention, and she even gets to go out on the catio without me! I miss my bunnies…

I do get some breaks from the cage, and the Mother of Cats just wanted me to let you know that we haven’t disappeared completely, but things have been busy for the last two weeks.

This is Mateo, signing off.

>^..^<

Note from the Mother of Cats: it was the most dang expensive hair ball in history. It looks like he ate some hard pieces too that I think must have been the noise maker of one of his toys. He vomited during surgery, but he didn’t develop pneumonia, so that trainwreck was dodged. Since he had abdominal surgery he can’t jump for another week, so that’s why he spends most of his time in the dog kennel. I can’t say enough about how much better the little surgical recovery suit is compared to wearing a cone around his little face.

While all of this happened, we had a major emergency in the family, a crazy hailstorm, my illness flared after repeated nights of interrupted sleep, and my roses bloomed like crazy out in the yard. My favorite is this one:

The name of this rose is “Easy Does It“.

Good to remember. One day at a time, my friends.

How crazy was the hailstorm? This crazy…

  1. Mateo, you poor bugger, I am so sorry to hear of your horrid experience !! Is it possible you ate something that you shouldn’t have ? Please don’t do that: it makes your Mother very unhappy, and also not at all well. Anyway, as long as you’re on the path to recovery, things are OK, yes ?

As for you, MoC – I think YOU are the poor bugger: cats don’t care about being sick, but their humans sure care about them when they are !!!

I do wish you’d gifted us with a shot of Mateo in his surgical suit … [grin]

    1. It was mostly fur, but it looks like he ate something that he shouldn’t have too. I’m pretty upset since I absolutely do not want this to happen again, and I’m not quite sure what happened. I bought some kitty clippers to keep his tummy shaved from now on, more cat de-shedding equipment, I plan to change their food once we are through this,
and absolutely get some pet insurance!!

I guess I should put up a picture that shows off his suit a little better…

      1. I missed it in the first edition; but the later one, with images of his hugely furry little body encased in it are simply wonderful !! – thanks from the heart, MoC !!

      2. I should of put those pic in last night, but in truth I was trying to get part one of the 2 week disaster posted because I was already pondering the one about my sister.

  2. Mateo, you poor baby! What an absolutely horrid experience. I imagine it was pretty upsetting for MoC, too. Rowdy sends his best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

    1. It was just awful, and to make things worse all the disasters occurred deep in the night: I got 2am, 5am, 7am, 7:30am, 9am, and then another call at noon. It was impossible to get sleep, and I wasn’t able to be with him, So hard and frustrating…

Today he got away from me and raced across the room upstairs, but I think that the incision looks okay. Cats do not understand…

      1. And they refuse to pay attention to wounds – or to illness, unless it’s laid them low.

Hmmmmm … D’you know, Marilyn, he might just be following his Mother’s example ?!!!

      2. Sighhh … Yeah, you’re not always recalcitrant. But on the other hand, you’re not always willing. Still, I guess I have to admit you know your stuff. 🙂

      3. It is a really hard balancing act. When to wait, when to send an email to your doctor, when to pull the fire alarm. When you are chronically ill you lose some of your perspective, which can be a problem…

      4. How a person whose health is the main issue – really the ONLY issue – could possibly maintain perspective, I dunno !

  3. Thinking all positive thoughts for Mateo (and MoC too). It’s so hard when they can’t tell you what’s wrong and you can’t tell them this too will pass. Our Little Bit does not much like other cats but since Mateo is so far away and so handsome, she sends best wishes too.

    1. It is hard to know when to panic, but he stopped eating, and was vomiting and hiding so I knew something big was wrong. This little guy demands tons of interaction and has a strict schedule, when he refused to go out onto the catio I panicked and loaded him into his carrier,

  4. I sure am having a hard time getting to leave a comment! Anyhow, I send best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mateo and MoC. It’s so hard when they can’t tell you what’s wrong and you can’t tell them it will be ok. Our Little Bit doesn’t like other cats at all but since Mateo is so far away (and so handsome!) she is sending good wishes too.

    1. The WordPress software wanted me to approve your comment. Now that I have done that I hope that you don’t have any more trouble.
Mateo: Hi Little Bit!!! Do you want to watch bunnies with me?

  5. Oh, the horror ! I hope he’ll be more carefull with his dining from now on…

Hope he leaves the suit on and the stitches heal well and soon. Big ups to you !

You must be so shaken ( and broke – emergency vets…ai…. ) !

    1. I am thinking of leaving him in his surgical recovery suit forever to prevent future furballs! Just kidding… I am going to everything that I can to make sure we don’t go through this again, though!

  6. Oh no, Mateo! I’m glad you are home resting. Wishing you a speedy recovery! You should probably listen to your mom and take it easy. Also, she will need some extra cuddles when you are able.

Now, MoC needs to get some rest. 🧡

    1. Mateo: Help!!!! I’m in a DOG crate.
Mother of Cats: He is getting supervised releases from the crate and lots of treats and cuddles. Today we finish up the last antibiotic and Friday, the day he gets out of the crate,

  7. Oh no! That was a pretty terrible couple of weeks! I am so glad Mateo is on the mend – the surgery recovery suit looks like a much better option. I hope all is OK with your family and you didn’t get any hail damage!! And most of all, hope you are able to rest and feel better yourself.
