Hannah and the CoalBear: Snowy April Caturday

Hi. I’m Hannah.

I’ve been keeping my eye on the Mother of Cats all week long.

It is really cold and snowy outside. I mean, the really wet sticky snow that gets on your paws and squishes up between your toe beans and is just the kind that all cats everywhere hate. Mateo went out a couple of times today and that boy was back inside within 60 seconds flat. Anyway, the lavender and other cute flowers are all safely in the garage, Mateo is safely indoors, and the Mother of Cats and I have been really productive.

Her weaving is off the loom. Finally.

Right now, the weaving is a long, long scarf that has some fringe on it. The Mother of Cats washed it last night and it is done for now. Mateo likes to sleep on it, and since the fabric is a little scratchy the Mother of Cats is totally okay with that. She has been talking about cutting it up and sewing little stuffed cats from it, or maybe a sewn bunny, and frankly I don’t care as long as there is catnip involved. A pillow would be kind of nice…

She also has made a lot of progress on her La Prairie sweater. Now she is working on one of the sleeves and is pretty happy with how it is looking.

Looking good, right? This what happens when you get quality cat assistance!

The body of the sweater is a little longer than it should be, but she is happy about that. The sleeves are kind of a problem because she doesn’t want them to be soooo long, so after doing some funky math and checking out what other knitters did, she has shortened up the blocks of solid knitting and now we’ll see how it all works out. She does seem to still be a little stressed about the whole thing. She keeps muttering… I hope I have enough yarn… I hope this won’t be too long… thank heavens there aren’t so many bobbles on the sleeves… I don’t care. I’m a cat. As long as the tuna keeps coming, I’m happy to support any knitting that is going on.

So, that’s it. It has been a pretty good week. The weaving is done, the sweater is moving along, and the Mother of Cats is also halfway through her book about dragons. Someday soon the snow will stop falling, the Mother of Cats will put our lavender back outside, and we will visit the bunnies again in the mornings.

This is my favorite pose after watching Dune: Part Two with the Mother of Cats this week.

This is Hannah, signing off.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Notes from the Mother of Cats: the book Hannah mentioned is A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon.

This book has over 800 pages in it!

I’m chomping at the bit to get all these lengthy projects finished up so I can knit more Emotional Support Chickens!! Also, I have books lined up from the library that I need to get read before next weekend…

  1. Hannah, the MoC’s weaving is BEAUTIFUL !!!! I cannot bear to think of its being cut up, even to make something cute. Is it REALLY scratchy ? Can it REALLY not be a shawl ? Please tell her I said I am so impressed with the quality of the weaving that I’m distressed by the thought of steeking it … But you can say that the cardi is coming along brilliantly ! :D

    1. The yarn is kind of rustic in nature… I had to pick out little bits of plants from it while I worked. I really used it as an experiment to see if the cats would let me weave or it I was up to using my arms so much. In that way it was a big success. Someone suggested that it could become a tote: great idea! In the meantime, I’m thinking of pulling out my floor loom and warping it up with some of my other yarns that are softer.

      1. Well, dullink, seeing as how you weave as well as you knit, you are hereby given permission to do whatever you like, loom-wise ! [grin]

  2. Oh Hannah you are so helpful and cute. That naughty snow ❄️. I think the weaving would make a beautiful cushion or tote bag when sewn. I’m sure you’ll be there to make sure it doesn’t fray when cut.

    1. I’m now considering the idea of sewing it into a sleep pad for the cats. I can pad it with batting and put a fabric bottom on it. I may sew through on either side of the cut lines so it won’t frey too much while working with it… if it works for steeks, it should be a great technique for this.

  3. Love your sweater! I can’t believe it snowed! It was mostly sunny and kind of warm here. Could the scarf be lined so it’s not scratchy next to you? I know – more work!

    1. It probably would be fine for another person who doesn’t have such sensitive skin. It really was a weaving experiment, and I did learn a lot doing it. I think it will go to the cats. In the meantime, I’m ready to take out the floor loom and get it warped up again.

  4. Oh, it hurts to think of that weaving being cut up! But I trust the judgment of those in charge.

The snow completely covered my redbud blossoms yesterday. Today it’s now 61 degrees, there’s no snow in sight, and the blossoms look okay, though I suppose they may still turn brown or something. Cross your paws.

  5. So many books, so little time! Have you read RF Kuang’s Babel? (If not, and you think you might like to, I will send you my copy since I just finished it.) I loved it – not an easy read but very good. We had a cold snap over the weekend too although just hail and not snow. But it meant I got to finish a pair of socks, so I’m cheering you on for exactly the right kind of days to get your beautiful La Prairie finished up!

    1. I had to pause A Day of Fallen Night to read Chain-Gang All Stars really quick before the library sucks it off my Kindle, but I am finally making good progress on it too. I have read Babel, and I have another one of Kuang’s books on the Kindle waiting for me. As you said, so many books…
The La Prairie is moving right along now that I am knitting while listening to Fallen Night and I hope to have one sleeve done this week. I’m playing yarn chicken, but hopefully all will be well in the end.

  6. Hello beautiful Hannah! Thank you for reporting – you and Mother of Cats have gotten a lot done 🙂 Hope the snow stops and it warms up for you all!
MoC, your La Prairie and weaving are just beautiful!
