Hannah and the CoalBear: Trail? What Trail?

Hi. I’m Hannah.

Any day on the catio is a good day!!

This has been a kind of strange week. The Mother of Cats came home on Monday after spending ANOTHER WEEKEND WITH THOSE KITTENS!!! and then she tried to make it up to us by being really nice all week. She fed us tuna twice a day and played with Mateo with the laser light more than usual. Like that would make up for sneaking off to spend time with these furry little guys instead of US.

Okay, they are kind of cute. Still, they aren’t as cute as Mateo and I were at the same age. Just saying…

Anyway, back to the strange week. The children in the neighborhood all went back to school (whatever that it…) this week and it suddenly is quieter in the backyard. A huge flock of geese flew over the yard yesterday, and today the Mother of Cats noticed that some of the berries on the bushes are turning red. The squirrel is more active than usual, and the moon was out in the daytime. Crazy, right? Here are the pictures.

The Mother of Cats is also excited about something called Pumpkin Spice. Is that a type of tuna?

Anyway, let’s now discuss the Mother of Cats and her COMPLETE ABANDONMENT of the Sharon on the Trail MKAL. She didn’t even bother to open up the emails with the pattern updates. She says that she hates her yarns, and she doesn’t love the pattern, and she just wants to knit the stuff she already has and to make some little knitted kitties to give away. I’d be concerned about her, but she is really happy with the stuff that she is knitting now, and I have to admit that it is looking good.

She put her sweater back onto the needles this week and got several inches of the body knitted. Looking good! She says that the funky looking new stitches are that way because they aren’t blocked yet. Mateo isn’t convinced.
Mateo: I’ll reserve judgement until I see that new knitting blocked. Call me Doubting Mateo.

She really spent some time on the new socks that she is making, and she really likes the way they are coming out. I think that has something to do with how she just UP AND ABANDONED Sharon from Security in her quest to apprehend that villainous Keith…

Aren’t these fun looking socks?

She likes these socks so much she is already dreaming of which yarns she will use to knit the next pair with. Poor Sharon, I’m pretty sure that the Mother of Cats will never return to the trail. She has her eye on some purple yarns for the next pair of socks…

Well, that is it. I hope that you all had a wonderful Caturday.

This is Hannah, signing off.

Notes from the Mother of Cats:

  • The sweater is Alpine Bloom by Caitlin Hunter.
  • The socks are Pressed Flowers Socks by Amy Cristoffers.
  • The abandoned MKAL is Sharon on the Trail by Casapinka. I have decided to wait for the finished shawl before I put any more knitting time into it.
  • The weather has been playing hell with my breathing. A couple of lows tracked right over the state and in the low pressure I don’t do well at all.
Do you see the low? That’s the place where all the wind arrows are swirling together just east of me in the state (I’m located just east of Denver). Fun and games for people with lung/heart conditions!

Behold Hannah and Mateo as kittens… they were pretty cute!

  1. Indeed you poor bastards suffer more than anyone from the weather simply because any little thing outa the ordinary can affect you. And when it’s BIG things – well ..!
Knowing you to be among the Great Knitters of the World, Marilyn, can you explain why there is a bit of unevenness in the body of the sweater ? I’ve never seen that in anything you’ve made .. but come to think of it, mebbe you just ain’t never shown us anything unblocked !! [grin]
The socks are terrific ! – I must draw the attention of a young friend (read blogger) in Glasgow to them, as they will undoubtedly knock hers off ! 😀
Oh, sorry Hannah ! – excuse me for not starting off with you, please !! Is that nimble squirrel a friend of yours ? – why, he’s almost as handsome in his own way as you are beautiful !!

    1. The funky unevenness is due to the sweater being knit on needles that are too big for the normal gauge so differences in tension and twist in the yarn are magnified. At least, that is my theory and I am sticking to it. The yarn blooms when it gets steam blocked and everything kind of smooths out. Wait until those socks get blocked! They will really settle down then!
I had a pulmonary function test this week and they had to halt it twice because I was dizzy. Dang weather!
Hannah: That dang squirrel is all over the place crashing through the bushes and chewing on parts of the tree. When it isn’t acting like a crazy thing it BARKS at me and Mateo. I don’t think it wants to be my friend, and I’m pretty sure that Mateo wants to teach it some manners. It is pretty good looking, though, I’ll give it that.

      1. Oh Hannah !! – a barking squirrel is definitely to be avoided !! 😀
Marilyn, you need a room that’s made weather-proof. Seriously. Unhappily, I feel that the renovation needed would be horribly expensive. 😦

      2. You’re being deliberately obtuse, Marilyn: I speak of somewhere you would be free of being caused to suffer from the weather. Forget it – seems this idea doesn’t appeal.

      3. No, can’t ignore you: I am driven to continue harassing you with patronising good advice until you buckle under, throw your hands up and agree that I am always right ! [grin]

  2. That portrait of Mateo belongs on his first album cover, or something. Dark, brooding, and so handsome! And the kitten shots … who can resist a kitten!?

And that sweater is really stunning. Can’t wait to see it finished.

Hope the weather will steady up soon and give you some relief.

    1. Well, Mateo is a Maine Coon cat, so he is kind of a Viking warrior dude. I’m pretty sure he would totally rock the Immigrant Song (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigrant_Song) by Led Zeppelin.
I’m happy with the sweater; so glad I didn’t go with the variegated yarn option. The designer just released a hat pattern in the same pattern and it is just fabulous!! I’m going to have to make one of those, too.
I really hate the weather right now! Fall will be here eventually.

  3. How difficult for you to compound your misery with extreme heat plus a knitting pattern you’re not in love with. If I had a house at sea level, I’d offer it to you. It seems as if it would be easier to breathe there than living at an elevation of over 5,000 feet. Love the pink flowers on the gray sweater and the cute kitty pictures.

    1. Hopefully the heat will be coming to an end soon as fall closes in. I came to Colorado from San Diego, and I do have family still there, but I would lose my great medical team and support structure that I have here if I left. I do have control over what I’m knitting and if I don’t love it, I’m not knitting it these days!

      1. I don’t blame you. I’d do the same thing if I were in your shoes. On another note, 112 degrees is forecast here for tomorrow, and 108 for Tuesday. I hope, as this front moves east, that it bypasses you.

  4. More abandonment from the MoC that’s disgraceful. For sure you are both the most beautiful/handsome of cats and those new kittens aren’t a patch on your looks. (I could be bias as my last cats were also black and white.). Anyway, good to hear of the tuna meals as a small apology for the treachery.
MoC Life is too short to knit projects you don’t love or with yarn you don’t think is right for the project. I won’t do any mystery projects for that very reason. Those socks are beautiful and MR is right Hannah (in Glasgow, her blog is Quiet Water Craft) will love those socks, as do I. Since I had a pair of colourwork socks shrink I’ve not ventured back into trying another pair, so I’ll just admire those that do.

    1. I do think that Hannah was the cutest kitten ever! I never knit MKALs for a long time because I also feel that it is best to not waste time and money/yarn on projects that you aren’t going to like or wear. The Sharon MKALs have been so much fun that I really couldn’t help joining in, but this time it just isn’t clicking for me.
Oh, I know Hannah… I didn’t know that she was in Glasgow. I am very careful about colorwork socks after making a pair that I couldn’t pull on over the arch of my foot (that was a BAD day!!) These socks are mosaic knitting and there seems to be a lot of stretch so I’m pretty sure that I’m good. They do have an afterthought heel which will make it all more stressful as I can’t try them on as I go. I’m thinking of doing the heel now before I knit further on the foot just to make sure…

  5. You have to admit, Hannah, that Mother is a pretty good photographer and uses good colour schemes for her knitting. I do home the weather gets easier on your breathing, Marilyn

  6. I hope the weather conditions ease up and make breathing easier for you, MOC! Hannah and Mateo were and are definitely the cutest of kittens! Though of course the new kittens are pretty adorable as well 🙂 Your sweater and socks are beautiful!

  7. All the kitty pictures are so cute! ❤ I hope you feel better soon. Weather causing health issues is no fun. (Well, okay, health issues are no fun period. But at least when I do something stupid that causes an issue I feel that's more on me than when it's the weather.)

I love the knitting choices! It all looks really great. The squirrels in my area have been going a bit more nuts than usual lately, too. Our house is stucco, and they love racing up and down the walls. The noise can be quite a shock when I'm not expecting it. How can little squirrels make so much noise?

    1. The weather is really driving me crazy lately. Actually, I just have sudden downturns and it is easier to blame the weather than myself. The squirrels used to run across my roof every day on their way to the back yard, and they are very noisy!! It really is kind of amazing.

    1. Oh, I went online hunting for yarn to knit that baby as soon as it dropped!!! Then I saw the new sweaters another designer just posted, put one into my shopping basket, and rediscovered a sweater that I already bought a kit for. I haven’t bought that yarn yet, but I’m champing at the bit to do it!
