Now there are 38…

Bright sunny days are upon us, and the yard is filled with the call of blue jays. Okay, these guys are really noisy, and there are a lot more than usual this year, so the robins seem to be keeping a low profile. All of my plants are growing like crazy in the heat and the gardens are starting to look really good.

The cats are spending lots of time out on the catio.

I’ve discovered that the weeds are also growing like… weeds, so I have been spending an hour every day in the cool of the evening working in the gardens trying to keep ahead of the weed invasion.

There is a lot of pink going on in the garden right now. The Princess Alexandra of Kent rose is stilling going strong, the pink yarrow burst into bloom, and the snapdragons that are now blooming again are… just the pink ones! Of course, the angelica has joined in, and I must admit that the pink does make me feel good.

Even my knitting has pink blooms! This is the Alpine Bloom sweater by Caitlin Hunter.

So, I was thinking that maybe I should get some red when I took a trip to my local garden center this week. Woohoo! Roses WERE ON SALE at 30% off!!! It didn’t take long to locate a landscape shrub rose that had beautiful cabbage rose-ish blooms.

This is the Grand Champion Red rose. I bought two of them.

I thought that it would do well with the Ruby Meidiland roses along the back of my house.

The Rubies have been doing really well this year, but the shrubs didn’t fill in along the back of the house the way I thought they would, so there is room to put another rose between plantings.
See, the new rose will fit right in there!

Now I have to do more weeding (duh!), get the new roses into the ground, and then I plan to put a nice organic mulch around everyone.

So now there are 38 roses!

Mateo: Don’t forget that tomorrow is Caturday!!

PS: Bea made this comment… “Mateo is wearing his don’t-mess-with-me face. He looks ready to rumble or hop on his Harley and hightail it for Sturgis.”

He kind of does, doesn’t he. I offer in his defense this picture of how he collapsed and fell asleep on the bookshelf last night…

The tough guy photo was taken right after I woke him up. It seems that he wakes up cranky…

  1. There can NEVER be too many roses – never !! The two Grand Champion Reds ought to fit in beautifully, Marilyn; but seeing as how it’s a sale, why limit yourself to only two newbies ? 😀

      1. You’re right, of course, and I’m thoughtless. Besides, you need spare leisure time for that gorgeous sweater !!!

  2. Mateo is wearing his don’t-mess-with-me face. He looks ready to rumble or hop on his Harley and hightail it for Sturgis.

    1. He has been a little that way lately! He likes to run behind Hannah slashing at her legs to make her run. I should add another picture to the post showing his collapsed sleeping in a strange position.

      1. Do add the sleeping Mateo picture. Maybe Hannah should contact Sharon from Security to make a house call (cat call?). Between the two of them, I’m sure they could sort Mateo and un-bore him.

Too bad there are no super-evasive drone moths for kitties in the Target pet department. Have Mateo, not Sharon from Security, contact Shark Tank. Sharon would ignore the drone idea and spend her time trying to spin off Casapinka to one of Mr. Wonderful’s holdings while Casapinka is out of contact with the office, hiking across France.

      2. Oh, the thought of Mateo and Sharon coming into contact with each other is enough to make my head explode. For one thing… think of all the fluff they are rocking! Mateo would totally want the drone moth or maybe flies. A dragonfly would be awesome!!

Mateo would also try to convince Shark Tank that there is a market for baby bunnies to chase indoors…

      3. Hmm. Boston Scientific making robotic baby bunnies for cats to chase indoors. A picture of the chaos that could ensue is streaming across my brain! I can’t see a market for that, unless the little robot long ears come with a warning to use outdoors only, supervised by a person who can work the remote or who knows how to program the little buggers for minimal yard damage.

  3. Beautiful roses. I should take better care of mine. One of mine is now the height of the garage and it isn’t a climber…its just enormous and is supported by the cotoneaster that covers the wall. It literally is about 15′ tall on the gable end of the garage.

      1. Love your new pink roses! And the sweater, too!
I should try and grow roses as I love them.

      2. They really are pretty easy, but I’ll never have roses as good as my mom’s were. Your mom had that fantastic climbing rose (Peace maybe?) that I admired. The climate is tricky as you have to consider elevation and exposure to cold.

      3. Yes – good memory – it was a Peace rose. My father was the gardener and he loved roses also. My favorite is the Chrysler Imperial – it looks like dark red velvet. I grew some in Grand Jct. and they’re still there.

      1. Nice ! There’s always this warm feeling when you see that what you work hard for and nurture gives you something in return 😊

      2. There is! I’ve been so lucky with the weather this year; usually things struggle in the heat and drought, and what survives gets savaged by grasshoppers…

  4. That’s a very pretty rose to add to your garden! I discovered yesterday that squirrels will eat rose buds… never knew that before, but I saw one sitting in my rose bush/tree yesterday evening happily munching away on something that was gradually dropping white petals.

      1. I’ve been watching the squirrels this year, and trying to decide if it just means that my future kitchen garden (next year) is going to draw them away from my roses, or just bring more of them to feast in my yard… at least the roses and the kitchen garden spot are on opposite sides of the house. I might not be able to stop them, but I can make it harder for them!

      2. My neighborhood is awash with squirrels, and one neighbor has a huge garden going. He goes crazy about the bunnies, but I haven’t heard too many outbursts about squirrels, so I’m thinking that they don’t damage the garden too much. He has a nectarine tree, however, and I’m thinking that he must lose some fruit from that!!

      3. I can’t imagine that the squirrels would be able to stay away from the nectarines! I keep finding half-eaten leftover plums (someone nearly must have a plum tree) that the squirrels can’t quite finish.

  5. Your garden is beautiful! Love all the cheery bright pinks 🙂 Hannah is gorgeous, and I think Mateo is definitely covering his embarrassment with his tough guy look 😉
