Hannah and the CoalBear: Updates from the Catio

Hi. I’m Mateo.

Don’t I look handsome? I’m keeping a close eye on a dragonfly…
There he is looking all sparkly.

I actually had my jaws and chompers on that bug, but the Mother of Cats chased me around the catio until it got away. Then she sat outside with us to make sure it stayed safe until it was time to come in for our nightly tuna treat. WHY does the Mother of Cats do this? She has gone to huge lengths to keep me from having any fun.

Look at what she did to the downstairs window that was my secret escape route to the great outdoors. Now there is a new cat-proof screen and a safety gate across the window. Sometimes I get a little frustrated with the Mother of Cats.

We have been spending lots of time out on the catio because the Mother of Cats like to drink her morning coffee out there while she reads her books. She keeps the birdfeeder stocked and there is lots of fun wildlife in the yard. Do I get to play with the animals? No, I do not.

Obviously the animals miss me because you won’t believe what happened this week… When the Mother of Cats let me out in the morning there WAS A BUNNY IN THE CATIO!!!! I got to chase him all around, the Mother of Cats was making some crazy noises while she chased me, and the bunny ran like you wouldn’t believe. Did I get to catch the bunny? No. I did not. I ran back into the safety of the house (the Mother of Cats was really making some concerning sounds) and the bunny was released back into the yard.

The Mother of Cats is calling this bunny “Death Wish Bunny”.

Anyway, that’s all that is going on around here. The Mother of Cats has been working on some little projects (mending the catio net and sealing the gap was one of them…) and I’ve been chasing Hannah around the house when not out on the catio.

Guess that is all for now. Would you like to see my scar?

Bye for now.

>^..^<

Notes from the Mother of Cats:

My tendonitis is back in full swing and I’m in braces again. It is really cramping my knitting style.

I have been cranking out fingerless mitts using my little Addi knitting machine, so I’m still getting some knitting done. I’ve also been reading books, and I’m slowly getting a series of posts put together.

Am I a little frustrated to have wildlife appear inside the catio after going to heroic lengths to keep all cats and wildlife safe. Yes, yes I am. I am sure that swinging a hammer and replacing window screen is contributing to my tendonitis.

Did I just buy pet insurance for both of my cats? Why yes, I most certainly did!!!

Have you missed seeing Hannah?

Here she is!!

  1. I foolishly opened this just before I have a GP appointment. 😦

I will return after it’s had and, I hope, reply to this almost delightful post, Marilyn !! But it depends on how long I have to wait; as I have another appointment, with my podiatrist, after lunch. One way or another, I’ll be back !! (I do love Arnie.)

    1. I’m having so much trouble with WordPress lately when I’m writing posts. It refuses to let me make changes to the text and I have to keep saving drafts and then reloading the pages as I work. So strange. There were at least two problems in this post that I just left because I was pretty exhausted with the battle.

Death Wish Bunny has been forced to move to a new entrance under the deck that has her away from the cats, and I haven’t seen them near the place where the break in occurred since I forced the shift. (Amazon has dig proof spiked fencing that you pound in to keep bunnies from digging under the side of the deck!) I feel so challenged keeping my hands operational while simultaneously ensuring the safety of all bunnies and kitties. As of today the Death Wish bunnies are still okay and Mateo is reduced to chasing bugs on the catio.

  2. Sorry to hear about the flare… Glad you got to chasing Mateo in time, to save the bunny and the dragonfly. What a beautiful photo of said dragonfly !

    1. I was out of my mind having just spend a big chunk of money saving Mateo’s life after he got out of the house and snacked on grass and wildlife, only to find a bunny inside the catio!! Thank heavens I was right there when it happened, and I was able to save everyone. I now have bought pet insurance in case I need to take a little furry monster in for emergency surgery again.

  3. Mateo, you should be pleased that the Mother understands you so well. How else would you get tuna? Marilyn, I’m sorry you have had more pain, yet pleased you did manage to run round the garden and wield that hammer.

  4. Handsome dragonfly! For some reason I’ve always thought they were just plain ol’ green.

Never a dull moment at your place!

  5. FINALLY …

Distracted by age-related ailments. Sighh …

Mateo, you are indeed handsome, there’s no doubt about it. But I have to say that the dragon-fly is as good-looking as you are, in its own way. (And such photography, MoC !!! – marvellous stuff, that irridescence !!!)

Showing us your scar indeed ! – you put your beloved mama through an enormous amount of worry and anguish and plant-discarding with your escape trick: there would be no scar had you behaved better, young feller ! I note that the death-wish bunny copied you, escaping INWARDS, poor silly thing, and the MoC had to do it all again. A woman’s work … 🙂

I am glad to see a lovely image of your sister, and I hope to read something from Hannah next time.

MoC, to you … Tendonitis rears its ugly head ? – of course the hammering did it. It’d bloody give ME tendonitis if I spent as much time as you doing tradies’ work. But I do comprehend the need for same: moggies are relentless eaters of what they shouldna and some little animals just don’t know when they’re well off !

We are near the end of the middle month of your summer: more images of your flowers, please, Marilyn !!!

    1. What is up with these reckless cats and bunnies?! I have announced to everyone that I cannot do any more hammering for a while!! Of course, I did use my drill to repair a sewing table…

It has been hot with storms here and the plants are all exhausted in the heat. The humidity is in the single digits until the storms fire up, so it is absolutely a nightmare for the roses. My bougainvillea has managed to get out some blooms, but the are boring… I weeded and fed the outdoor flowers, so maybe I’ll get some action in another couple of weeks.

Evidently Mateo not only snacked on some wildlife, but he ate grass too. He’s an idiot!

  6. I’m sorry to hear about the unintended Catio visitors. I know you’re relieved that the rabbit exited safely. That’s an ingenious screen fix to thwart the four-footed escape artist. I’m smiling picturing you reading with your coffee and inquisitive cats nearby. It sounds like a lovely summer so far.

    1. I’m spending every morning and evening out on the catio, and I just moved my sewing machine downstairs to the room closest to the catio so I can sew inside while cats snooze on the catio. Pretty good summer, that it is!

      1. Indeed. I just helped a friend set up her sewing/quilting room. It’s also now downstairs facing the patio where seed toss attracts birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and sometimes deer. Her kitty is older and content to watch from indoors.

  7. Oh my goodness – all these beasties working so hard to be on the wrong sides of their barriers! Glad you have gotten everything repaired and everyone safely back in their corners. Hopefully you can rest and let your tendons heal up. Hannah and Matteo are beautiful as always, and also that is an amazing picture of the dragonfly!

    1. I’ve been in wrist braces all week and the tendons are finally starting to behave themselves. I still struggle to knit, but I just took out the sewing machine and I plan to see how much trouble I can get into with it!

  8. That bunny has a death wish for sure! I’m glad the cats are doing well, and hope your tendonitis flare-up stops soon! Maybe the cats will even settle down for a bit to prevent you from needing to go to additional heroic lengths to keep everyone safe…

    1. It has gotten hot here with afternoon thunderboomers, and that is helping keep all of the cats and wildlife under control. Mateo is absolutely over his surgery and driving Hannah crazy chasing her. I asked the internet how I could keep a hyperactive cat entertained, and the internet said… build a catio! Made me laugh! I obviously can’t let them out there unsupervised, but I am spending more time out there as my wrists heal up.
