Hannah and the CoalBear: Babes Hats!

Hi. I’m Hannah.

Do I look annoyed? Yes, I am! That dang Mateo is whapping my tail!

Excuse me while I take a moment to put that young man into his proper place. The CoalBear has been a handful all week long. He chased the bees on the catio and there were some close calls. He catches grasshoppers and brings them into the house to play with. The Mother of Cats especially didn’t like that! He runs wild with his toys at 3am. He has been attacking the Mother of Cats’ knitting.

There has been no end to his mischief all week long!

The Mother of Cats has been knitting hats lately. It all started when she bought a box of yarn at her favorite yarn shop that were dyed in Barbie world colors.

The Mother of Cats thinks that these are happy, happy, happy colors. She is using all of the yarn to make hats for her community knitting group called Frayed Knots; the hats need to be done in the next two weeks before the next meeting, so she has been knitting a lot.

I’ve been lots of help with the whole knitting effort as she cranked out the hats. Today she finished the 4th hat, and there are two more to go. Look at how nice they look!

Today has been cold and rainy all day so we didn’t even get to go out on the patio. Mateo is just beside himself and causing trouble endlessly. He knocked over an orchid plant. He pulled the tablecloth off the table. He dragged off one of the knitted hats.

Seriously, I’m almost ready to rent him a kitten!

Well, that’s all the news. Time to go help the Mother of Cats with her next hat.

This is Hannah, signing off.

Notes from the Mother of Cats:

  • That box of really cute yarn came from Spun Right Round. The yarn is Squish DK, and it really is wonderful to knit with. Don’t you love the Barbie-esque colors?
  • The hats will be given to patients at either the Kaiser infusion centers in the Denver area or to the patients at a cancer treatment center that Frayed Knots also donates to.
  • The hat pattern is Barley by Tin Can Knits.

  1. Hiya, Hannah – glad to have a shot of you looking very regal ! 🙂
MoC: I do wish I’d read about them hats a few weeks ago: a very dear friend has been diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer at stage 4, and is also unable to speak because of a neural problem with her vocal chords. I do believe Diana is worse off than you are, Marilyn .. which is about your only comfort and there’s none at all for her. I crocheted some chemo hats, but they weren’t anything like as nice as your knitted ones – and I could’ve knitted those .. It’s that crochet is so much more controllable than knitting; you know, just the one hook and no pulling the wrong thread and unravelling acres of work ..

    1. I am so sorry to hear about your friend. What a terrible blow for her, and how nice you were to make her hats. I love crochet, but I can’t do it anymore (well, for only an hour, maybe) because it is too hard on my wrists. I manage knitting by pushing the cable needles with the backs of my hands. This yarn is very nice and soft, so I hope that the hats go to someone like your friend and will make them happy

      1. I wish they could go to people who know their origin, Marilyn – it would make them very happy to know of your endless struggles with your health that you never give up on .. you’re an example for us all, my dear !

  2. I’m not a Barbie fan but I love these colors and the hats. Could have used one myself a few years back. I can attest that coming from someone who cared enough to make it for me would have meant a great deal. That in addition to being cheerful and cozy. It’s a wonderful thing you are doing.

    1. I had one of the original Barbie dolls when they came out. I was never hugely into them, but they were cool because she was independent! Frayed Knots has gotten letters back from hat recipients who let us know how much the hats meant; I want them to be nice and cushy because we all deserve something like that in a tough time! I’m so glad that you made it through your tough time and that the days of needing a hat are gone. 🙂

  3. Goodness gracious, Marilyn, I definitely do NOT need any more yarn, but I’m very tempted to buy a couple of skeins of that one. What a gorgeous color!

Hannah, you’d better tell Mateo not to mess up the Mother of Cats’ knitting! That color is amazing!

    1. I Know. My yarn stash is epic, but as soon as I saw the colors I had to have the set. Did I mention that the yarn is buttery soft? It has been such a pleasure to knit that I was on the website last night looking for a color that would make a great sweater for me.

    1. The charity is just wonderful! I found it accidently when one of the members was dragging out a huge bag of donated yarn from a shop that I had just entered. They just recently began donating to the DART program connected to the Denver Police that I completely support. They send out a specialist response team (instead of the police) in mental health emergencies and other crisis in at risk populations (like the homeless community). So glad to provide stuff for them to use!
The truth is, Mateo misses my son who came to visit a couple of weekends ago. He loves the commotion of having another person around, and he just plain loves my son!

      1. I fully support non-police response teams like that, too. It’s better for everyone involved to have a response team suited to the specific crisis at hand.

I can see that! Cats have their favorite people, and it’s obvious when they miss them.

  4. What beautiful hats, and what beautiful yarn! You are so kind to make these hats for this project 🙂 Is there a Spun Right Round Barbie sweater in your future?
Hannah – your little brother is a handful right now, but bear with him 🙂
